Real Estate Investments and Real Estate Investment Trusts Discussed in a Debate
A debate titled “Real Estate Investments and Real Estate Investment Trusts” was held within the scope of the Financial Investment Instruments course conducted by the Department of Accounting and Taxation at Bandırma Vocational School. The event was organized under the coordination of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nevzat ÇALIŞ with the active participation of students. Assist. Prof. Dr. Emre ALARSLAN and Assist. Prof. Dr. Musa YALMAN also attended the event as guests.
During the event, students discussed real estate investments and real estate investment trusts comparatively in terms of the opportunities they offer to investors, risk-return balance, liquidity, capital requirements, and long-term investment preferences.
Students defending real estate investments emphasized that real estate represents a tangible asset, can provide rental income, offers long-term appreciation potential, and may serve as a hedge against inflation.
Students defending real estate investment trusts highlighted that this investment instrument enables investors to invest in real estate through capital markets, provides professional portfolio management, allows small investors to indirectly participate in large-scale real estate projects, and offers a more liquid structure compared to direct real estate investments.
Throughout the debate, students evaluated the differences between direct real estate investments and real estate-based capital market instruments in terms of market conditions, investor profiles, and financial decision-making processes. The event contributed to students’ ability to analyze financial investment instruments comparatively and express their views based on evidence.
At the end of the event, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nevzat ÇALIŞ stated that examining real estate investments and real estate investment trusts together made a significant contribution to students’ financial literacy. Assist. Prof. Dr. Emre ALARSLAN and Assist. Prof. Dr. Musa YALMAN, who attended the event as guests, also stated that the debate was beneficial in terms of developing students’ comparative analysis and critical thinking skills.
